Community Garden

A site has been identified in the centre of Stow that can be used as a Community Garden. The site is in the process of being handed over from Scottish Borders Council to the community.

We need to know …

What the community would like from a community garden?

Some of the suggestions so far include a seating area, sensory garden, wildlife area flowers veg patch, greenhouse or poly-tunnel to produce plants for the garden / village. There is no shortage of ideas but we need to know what the community as a whole would like to see. To have your say, leave your comments below. Deadline for comments 1st June 2012. Thank you!

This is great news. I know Low Carbon Galawater were interested in setting up something like this. Fantastic to have some experts on hand from GWHA… count me in. I’d most like to see a polytunnel for veg and soft fruit growing.

This is a great idea. Personally I would be interested in a community garden that supplied vegetables and fruit for the community. I would happily give an afternoon a month to come and weed the onion plots!

The other ideas are all great except that I don’t think a wildlife garden is necessary as we have plenty all around us.

I think a solar / Eco heated greenhouse / polytunnel would be a great idea. It could provide plants for the garden and wider community at a fraction of the cost of buying them in.

A great idea, a place to sit and enjoy as well as productive. soft fruit, veg and a source of plants for the community are a good idea. I would be willing to make myself available to help, knowledge limited but willing to learn!

I think a Community Garden is a brilliant idea. An extra space to grow veg for those folk who want to grow large amounts, a place to relax and get fit doing a bit of outdoor work and to encourage children to become involved in gardening and nature in general. We could use it to grow flowers that could be distributed to the community. I think a ‘wild space’ should be left to encourage wildlife. The possibilites are endless.

Great news, was really pleased to see this in the newsletter – this was flagged up as potential low carbon project early on, so great that interested parties are taking this forward!!!

An addendum to the community garden… maybe we could set up a produce swap. (or could this be part of the flower show?) This year was patchy for me to say the least. Except for some inexplicable reason I have masses of broad beans… far too many, even though they a family favourite. Would happily swap or give away the glut.
